PDA Technology for Student Success: Assistive Technology

Requirements for Online Group Meetings:
We will be using Adobe Connect for your online group meetings. Prior to the first group meeting, you will receive an email with a link to your course’s Adobe Connect room. Adobe Connect does not require any special software. You will simply be going to a website for your group meeting. All you need is a computer with a high-speed internet connection (you may want to avoid using a wireless connection or dial-up connection if possible). Since the online group meetings require interaction from all participants, you will need to obtain a microphone and headphones. Headsets with microphones can be purchased for about $15-$20 at Target, Wal-Mart or all electronic stores. You may be able to borrow a headset from your school. If you have a built-in microphone on your computer, you will still need a headset with a microphone.
In addition to online group meetings, participants read and study online course content, complete required assessment tasks and communicate with the facilitator regularly. Your syllabus will assist you in pacing your work throughout the course. Upon completion of all requirements, participants will receive 20 inservice points.
This course enables educators to develop, increase and demonstrate knowledge about assistive technology devices and services and the process of helping students with disabilities select, obtain, and use assistive technology. Content includes information about the impact of identified areas of disability including: vision, auditory, physical, communication, intellectual, and cognitive processing and how assistive technology devices and services provide support.
The PDA courses, developed by the Florida Department of Education Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services, are included in the Master Inservice Plan in all Florida school districts. If you are not currently employed in education in Florida, it is your responsibility, prior to starting the module, to contact your former school district or private school agency to determine if they are able to submit inservice credits to FDOE for you.
